Amica two counsellors talking smiling

Amica is an NHS-based service; all the counsellors and psychotherapists are employed by the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. It provides services to a number of other NHS and Public Sector organisations. Currently 60,000 staff are covered by its services.

The service started in the late 1980s and has grown from a piece of research by Professor Tom Cox, who researches workplace and organisational stress for the World Health Organisation. The Human Resources framework for the NHS made explicit in Working Together - Securing a Quality Workforce for the NHS (NHSE, 1998) that all NHS staff in England should have access to counselling services by April 2000. The service has developed, reflecting the ever-changing needs of the staff and organisations.
