Supporting Yourself Through the Festive Season

Amica will remain open throughout the festive period to support our colleagues. While some services may be limited, you can always reach us for support by calling 0116 254 4388. Our phone line will remain open every day 24 hours a day.

At Amica, we know that the festive period can feel complicated – especially for those working in healthcare and public services.

For some, Christmas brings moments of warmth and connection. For others, it can magnify pressure, tiredness, grief, or a sense of having to keep going when reserves are already low. Financial strain, family expectations, and the idea that Christmas needs to be “done well” can quietly add weight. Loneliness can feel sharper. Loss can feel closer. And the darker months can affect mood, energy, and motivation in ways that are hard to explain but very real.

Many of our colleagues continue to work throughout this period, providing care and support at a time when services are stretched and demands don’t pause. In that context, looking after yourself isn’t an extra task to manage — it’s part of staying human in difficult conditions.

Gentle Ways to Support Yourself

There is no ideal way to get through Christmas. What helps will differ from person to person, and from day to day. You might find it helpful to consider some of the following — not as things you should do, but as options you can take or leave:

  • Spend time in ways that fit your capacity
That might mean rest, quiet, limited company, gentle movement, or brief moments of connection. You’re allowed to choose what works for you.

  • Be thoughtful about social media
Festive posts often show edited moments rather than real lives. Stepping back, even temporarily, can reduce comparison and protect your mood.

  • Be mindful with food and alcohol
Seasonal treats are part of this time of year, but noticing their impact on sleep, energy, and emotions can help you feel more steady.

  • Stay connected in simple ways
A conversation with someone you trust — a colleague, friend, or professional — can make a difference. You don’t need to wait until things feel unbearable.

  • Notice others, where you can
Small check-ins or quiet acts of kindness can matter — not as an obligation, but as part of shared humanity.

  • Know your limits
Reduced capacity is not a personal failure. Saying no, doing less, or letting some things slide is often a realistic and compassionate response.

If you’re feeling low, flat, irritable, or out of rhythm at this time of year, you’re not alone — and there’s nothing wrong with you.
