Amica at UHL for Disability History Month 2024

UK Disability History Month 2024

Disability History Month (14 November – 20 December 2024) is a chance to recognise the lives, rights, and contributions of disabled people – and to explore how we can all be more inclusive.

UK Disability History Month encourages open conversations about disability, challenges stereotypes, and promotes inclusion in all areas of life –  from work and education to health and community.

At Amica, we’re proud to be part of this year’s activity across University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL). Our team will be hosting pop-up stalls at all three hospital sites during November, starting conversations and sharing resources to promote disability awareness and accessibility.

These stalls are more than just information points. Our counsellors will be there to meet staff face-to-face, answer questions, and talk about how Amica’s support is accessible and responsive to the needs of disabled colleagues. Whether someone is living with a visible or hidden disability, we want everyone to feel they can ask for help in ways that work for them.

We’ll also be highlighting the Sunflower Lanyard scheme – a simple but powerful way for people with hidden disabilities to signal that they may need extra time, support, or understanding. By promoting this scheme, we hope to help staff and patients across UHL feel more seen and supported.

“It is important that colleagues at UHL are able to bring their whole selves to work,” says Linsey Milnes, Head of Health and Wellbeing at UHL.
“This has a positive impact on mental wellbeing and gives a more positive experience to time spent at work. The Sunflower membership scheme will be of great benefit not only to colleagues that have a hidden disability but will also help raise awareness of different conditions and how others can support their colleagues. The scheme will also be of great benefit to our patients and families when they visit our hospitals and enrich the care that we give them.”

Disability History Month reminds us that inclusion is everyone’s responsibility – and that small, everyday actions can make a big difference. By being visible, approachable, and practical in our support, Amica is helping to create a culture where everyone feels welcome and valued at work.
