Amica provides counselling emotional and psychological support but not policy advice
World Mental Health Day, observed every year on October 10th, is a global initiative that highlights the importance of mental health and well-being. In 2023, the theme for World Mental Health Day is “Mental Health as a Universal Human Right.” This theme underscores the fundamental principle that mental health is a right inherent to all individuals, regardless of their background, circumstances, or location.
Mental health is an integral part of our overall well-being, and it should be regarded as a universal human right. Just as we have the right to physical health, education, and freedom of expression, we also have the right to mental health. This means that everyone, regardless of their age, gender, race, or socio-economic status, deserves access to quality mental health care, support, and resources.
We at Amica are making a contribution to this aim by ensuring everyone around the world can access our written and video resources freely.
It might feel hard to start talking about how you are feeling, but many people find that just sharing their experiences can help them feel better. It may be that just having someone listen to you and show they care can help in itself.
If you aren’t able to open up to someone close to you, the Samaritans run a 24-hour helpline that you can call to talk to someone confidentially.
As an employee, you can contact us for counselling if you’re finding things difficult. Or your GP can help. And you or someone you are concerned about can access counselling at your local NHS Talk Therapies service.

One of the primary barriers to achieving mental health as a universal human right is the stigma and discrimination associated with mental health conditions. People often face prejudice and misconceptions when they seek help for mental health issues, which can deter them from accessing the care they need.
Throughout Leicestershire today multiple organisations have come together to provide opportunities to meet and talk about mental health, ensuring all members of the local community are given a safe space to talk.
